Virginia Commonwealth University’s Monroe Park Campus hosted 15 students and two alumni from its sister campus in Qatar this week culminating in the sixth annual Qatar Day celebration.

Since 2010, students and faculty from VCUQatar in Doha have visited Richmond each fall for a week of cultural activities, including tours of the campus, city and Washington, D.C. They also participate in VCU’s annual Qatar Day. The annual event strengthens the relationship between the Qatar and Richmond campuses while providing students and faculty with an opportunity to learn more about each other.

VCU’s Richmond students — hundreds of whom attended this week’s celebration — have come to look forward to the annual Qatar Day, which includes henna tattoos, authentic Middle Eastern food, Arabic calligraphy, music, a fashion show and the opportunity to dress in traditional Qatari garb for a professional photo.

Established in 1998, VCUQatar is a center of excellence for education and research in art and design, offering five undergraduate majors, and one graduate program: Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking; a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design. It was the first campus established in Education City in Doha through a partnership with the Qatar Foundation.
