Mayer was recently named a 2015-16 VCU ASPiRE faculty fellow. Academic Scholars Program in Real Environments Faculty Fellows are selected to share their community engagement experiences with ASPiRE students and staff.

In her new role, Mayer will work with VCU ASPiRE students on diabetes education and health coaching. She plans to engage pharmacy students and residents in her endeavors.

Since joining the pharmacy faculty in 2006, Mayer has been involved in community engagement on a number of levels. She is one of 17 faculty members directly involved in developing and sustaining the school’s Pharmacists Collaborative Care and Outreach in the Community program, which recently won both the C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award  and the Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award.

Mayer’s primary community partnership is with CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, which provides a variety of services for the uninsured and underserved. CrossOver is the area’s only free clinic that houses a licensed pharmacy and Mayer serves as the School of Pharmacy’s primary site preceptor. She is also a program director for the VCU-CrossOver Ambulatory Care Residency Program, which was created as a result of the need for more services for patients with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.

Neimeyer started his new position at VCU in May. He comes from Temple University Health System, where he served as senior legal counsel managing many of the operational components of the health system’s and medical school’s legal services, including acting as counsel for its various boards and committees.

“Having spent his entire 24-year legal career in health care, Neimeyer comes with a broad and in-depth understanding of the industry,” said Jerome F. Strauss III, M.D., Ph.D., interim CEO of the VCU Health System and executive vice president for medical affairs of the health system.

Neimeyer received his bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and his juris doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a Master of Laws in Taxation from Georgetown University.

Neimeyer is the successor to Jean Reed, J.D., vice president of general counsel for the VCU Health System, who will retire this summer after more than 26 years with VCU.

Peter Uetz, Ph.D., associate professor, Center for the Study of Biological Complexity, VCU Life Sciences

Peter Uetz, Ph.D.

The American Society for Microbiology has invited Uetz to teach a class on protein interaction research in the fall at the DBT-ICT Centre of Energy Biosciences in Mumbai, India. Uetz’s research focuses on developing improved versions of the yeast two-hybrid system, a method that allows researchers to study the interactions among proteins. Such interactions are critical for virtually every process in a cell, both healthy and diseased, ranging from metabolism to cancer. Uetz’s research team has published a large fraction of microbial interaction data, including protein interaction maps for bacteria that cause syphilis and gastric ulcers.

Hundley, a VCU alumnus, was named the 2015 Victoria & Albert Museum Illustrator of the Year by the London-based Folio Society, and is the first artist to receive more than one nomination in any category.

His work on Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” received both Best Illustrated Book and Best Overall awards. It also was used as a cover story for London’s Artists and Illustrators publication. Hundley created the 12 color illustrations in a combination of pencil, painting and digital techniques, working closely with Folio Society Art Director Sheri Gee.

“We couldn’t be happier with the finished product and we’re delighted his work has been recognized by the V&A judging panel,” Gee said.

The V&A Illustration Awards are given annually to the best book or magazine illustration published in the United Kingdom during the previous year. Each winner receives £2,000 and a trophy, and Best Overall winners receive an additional £2,000. Winning works will be displayed at the V&A Illustration Awards Gallery, opening this year.

Hundley returns to the United States to lead a major international creative initiative called Legendeer, comprised of world-class writers, illustrators, innovators and others. The expedition includes a three-day symposium and a six-day expedition into Yosemite National Park.

The Belmont Forum has awarded Fernandez a large, multiyear grant to study the sustainable use of arctic resources.

Fernandez is one of the principal investigators of the “Bioeconomic Analysis for Arctic Marine Resource Governance and Policy” project. Her research focuses on providing insights to develop tools that will help manage marine resources — resulting in better resource conservation, reduced invasive species and marine pollution — and allow policymakers to specify sustainable harvesting policies.

The grant is funded through the National Science Foundation.
