Mandatory student training aims to combat sexual violence

Virginia Commonwealth University is providing mandatory online training for students about sexual violence prevention, bystander intervention and risk reduction. Students have until Nov. 1 to complete the online training program.

In a message to students earlier this month, VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D., said federal laws and regulatory guidance are aiming to reduce incidents of sexual assault, harassment, domestic-dating violence and stalking by increasing education, transparency and accountability at colleges and universities. VCU has joined other colleges and universities in requiring students to learn about sexual violence, bystander intervention and risk reduction strategies.

“I also signed a joint declaration with other Virginia colleges and universities to work together to aggressively combat sexual violence on campuses, an important initiative taken by Governor McAuliffe,” Rao wrote. “Additionally, I have directed a thorough review of current programs to ensure that VCU’s outreach, support and compliance efforts are fully consistent with current state and federal guidance.”

VCU students received instructions from the Student Affairs Division for completing the Student Success™ “Not Anymore”online education program.

Step 1:  Log in to the program at: https://www.studentsuccess.org/vcu14/notAnyMore/login

Step 2:  Enter the school access code: 14828

Step 3: The student will be taken to the “Not Anymore” Account Setup Page and should follow the instructions provided. Students will be able to leave and re-enter the program to complete the program in several sittings without having to start over. Anyone who runs into problems taking or re-entering the program should not start over. Contact Student Success through the HELP button for assistance.

Students will be able to access the programs until at least May 31, 2015, for reference purposes and will receive follow-up contacts from Student Succes with key program information.

In her email message to students explaining the instructions, Melissa E. Exum, Ph.D., vice provost for student affairs, said VCU is committed to student success and providing a safe and healthy campus environment.

VCU strives to provide a climate of inclusion, a dedication to addressing disparities wherever they exist and an opportunity to explore and create in an environment of trust.

“VCU strives to provide a climate of inclusion, a dedication to addressing disparities wherever they exist and an opportunity to explore and create in an environment of trust,” Exrum wrote. “In compliance with Title IX, VCU prohibits gender discrimination, including sexual misconduct.”

Exrum also detailed a number of upcoming events aimed at promoting a safe healthy campus, including a domestic violence slam poetry night on Oct. 6 and a red flag campaign in October, utilizing posters and social media to highlight warning signs of unhealthy relationships.

Anyone with questions or concerns regarding the online training program requirements should contact Tammi Slovinsky at tslovinsky@vcu.edu.
