Richard Wenzel, M.D., named Laureate of Virginia ACP chapter

Dr. Richard Wenzel has been awarded the Laureate Award by the Virginia chapter of the American College of Physicians.

The Virginia chapter of the American College of Physicians has bestowed the Laureate Award to Richard Wenzel, M.D., chair of internal medicine at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

The Laureate Award honors fellows and masters of the college who have rendered distinguished service to their chapters and community and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research and service to their community. 

"To me it is always exciting to receive any honor, but to be recognized by colleagues and friends whose work I admire is especially pleasing," said Wenzel, who is a master of the college. "I am also fortunate to be recognized for doing all the things I enjoy, teaching and research."

Wenzel accepted the award this month at the ACP's annual state meeting in Williamsburg. The ACP also recognized Sarah Corley, M.D., former governor of the Virginia chapter.

A professor of internal medicine at VCU and an internationally known expert on infectious diseases, Wenzel has been chair of internal medicine at VCU since 1995.

The American College of Physicians is the largest medical-specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States.
