Michael RoussosAfter a national search, Michael Roussos has been appointed president of VCU Medical Center, the flagship academic medical center of VCU Health System’s clinical and academic enterprise. Roussos will begin his tenure in December 2021.

Most recently, Roussos served as the lead administrator for University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, a major academic medical center that supports the region’s only Level 1 trauma program for both adults and children and offers the highest level of maternal and neonatal care. As lead administrator, he spearheaded the hospital’s COVID-19 response during Texas’ worst surges. He also championed the creation of the Center of Life, the nation’s second hospital-based, regional center for organ donation, which increased donations through community outreach and partnerships.

"Mike Roussos' recruitment is the result of a highly competitive national search," said Art Kellermann, M.D., senior vice president for VCU Health Sciences and CEO of VCU Health System. "He understands the effort and commitment required to not only persevere but succeed in challenging circumstances. His career preparation, experience, and track record as a thoughtful and engaged academic medical center leader will be a great addition to VCU Medical Center and the communities we serve."

Roussos was a key member of University Hospital’s leadership team that recently steered a successful transition to Epic, a patient-centered electronic medical records system VCU Health System will implement enterprisewide later this year.

"I am excited to join VCU Health during a time of tremendous opportunity," Roussos said. "VCU Medical Center’s commitment to its community is evident in the well-coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic, national rankings and designations, and commitment to enhance the patient experience through the continued transformation of its downtown campus."

Prior to his leadership at University Hospital, Roussos worked at HCA Healthcare for 13 years, rising through a variety of roles to become CEO of Mainland Medical Center, Texas City, Texas, where he worked until his move to University Hospital in San Antonio. He earned a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin.

Roussos succeeds Ron Clark, M.D., who has served as interim president for VCU Medical Center since 2019 and will continue in this role until December.
