Virginia Commonwealth University announced today that Steven Holl’s lecture at the university originally slated for Sept. 12 has been rescheduled for Oct. 15.
Holl is the American Institute of Architects 2012 Gold Medal recipient and the architect of VCU’s Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA). Steven Holl Architects’ design for the VCU ICA will be presented in an exhibition opening at the Virginia Center for Architecture on Sept. 13. “Steven Holl Architects: Forking Time” includes more than 30 study models and concept drawings that depict the evolution of the design for the VCU ICA. The exhibition first showed at Meulensteen gallery in New York in April.
VCU’s Institute for Contemporary Art will be a multidisciplinary arts institution that will serve as a catalyst for exhibitions, programs, research and collaboration across the university, while working closely with VCUarts, the top public university graduate arts & design program in the U.S. Holl’s lecture, along with the exhibition, will offer a glimpse inside the design process of this new incubator for the arts.
VCUarts will engage students and the larger community in an active conversation about the ICA, inviting them to respond to the question “What do you hope to experience at the VCU ICA?” on VCUarts Facebook page (facebook.com/vcuarts) and on Twitter with the hashtag #VCUICA. Responses will be posted to the ICA site: ica.vcu.edu.

About the VCU ICA
Part exhibition and performance space, part lab and incubator, the 38,000-square-foot building will feature a series of flexible programming spaces for the presentation of visual art, theater, music, dance and film by nationally and internationally recognized artists. The facility also encompasses a 245-plus-seat performance space, outdoor plazas, a sculpture garden, classrooms, a café and administrative offices. Scheduled to open in 2015, this non-collecting institution is designed to facilitate the way artists are working today by accommodating the increasing lack of barriers among different media and practices, mirroring the cross-disciplinary approach at VCU’s School of the Arts (VCUarts). VCUarts has long been the top public university graduate arts and design program in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. The ICA will complement and enhance the offerings of VCU while also serving as a new destination for contemporary arts and culture in the region.
A capital campaign is underway for the $32 million project. A director search is in process.
