VCU, Dominion Energy host Power the Future design-a-thon

More than 400 students from 89 colleges will work 24 hours nonstop this weekend to develop an innovative solution to a hypothetical Dominion Energy-related situation at the Power the Future 2018 design-a-thon.

Presented by the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering and Dominion Energy, the Major League Hacking event takes place Oct. 20-21 in the College of Engineering East Hall, 401 W. Main St.

Power the Future is a unique 24-hour challenge where college students from all disciplines put their talents to the test to bring ideas to life. Teams will be briefed on a Dominion Energy-related scenario and will brainstorm, prototype and present their solutions to a panel of industry experts. Their solutions could be used on real-life Dominion Energy issues.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Judging takes place on Sunday, Oct. 21. The first round of judging begins at 10:15 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Awards will be announced at 4 p.m.

A $4,000 cash prize will be awarded to the top team with additional prizes for second- and third-place teams.
