RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System today announced that Arizona hospital executive John F. Duval has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of MCV Hospitals.  Duval’s appointment follows a six-month national search to fill the position.

“Duval brings impressive credentials to this job with more than 20 years of health care management experience, most of it an academic medical center setting,” said Dr. Eugene P. Trani, VCU president and president and chair of the VCU Health System Board of Directors.

For the past six years, Duval has been chief operating officer of University Medical Center at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson.  Prior to that he was vice president for professional and ancillary services at the health sciences center.

“I am quite delighted to be part of the VCU Health System and the Richmond community,” Duval said.  “MCV Hospitals and the VCU Health System have a great tradition of excellence in providing care, education and research, with a reputation that is respected nationally and internationally.”

As hospital CEO, Duval will be responsible for the overall management of the hospital, including administration, financial operations, patient care services, support services, clinical services and medical affairs.

“We’re very fortunate to attract someone of his abundant talent to our medical center,” said Sheldon Retchin, VCUHS senior executive vice president and chief operating officer.  “Having John Duval on our management team is an important step toward an exciting and bright future for the VCU Health System.”

Duval assumes his new position June 1.  Pending approval of the Executive Committee of the VCUHS Board of Directors meeting April 15, Duval will replace William Kerr, who has been interim CEO of MCV Hospitals since August 2002.

Duval has a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine.
