Richmond, Va. - The Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center will close its Internal Medicine Primary Care Clinic at the Stony Point location, effective June 30, 2004.  The closure is part of a reconfiguring of medical services at the Stony Point facility, according to medical center officials.

"While many issues were considered in making this decision, the primary reason for closing the primary care practice at Stony Point is the need to balance our teaching mission with the creation and expansion of specialty services," said Dr. Richard Wenzel, chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, VCU School of Medicine and president of MCV Physicians. "As we consolidate the clinics downtown we want more teachers for our new physicians than we have had before and we also want to focus on the specialty needs of the community at our Stony Point facility."

Current patients will be able to receive primary care at the VCU Medical Center's Ambulatory Care Center at 11th and Clay Streets in downtown Richmond, as of July 2004.  Current female patients also have the option of seeing doctors in Women's HealthCare at the Stony Point location.

"A goal of VCU Medical Center physicians is to provide clinical services that distinguish us from other healthcare providers in the community," Wenzel said.  "VCU's strategic focus at Stony Point will be on womens health, oncology, and bone and joint disorders backed by a state-of-the-art imaging center."

The VCU Medical Center at Stony Point is an outpatient facility providing comprehensive medical services and information.  Specialty services now offered include hematology oncology and radiation oncology through VCU's Massey Cancer Center; radiology including CT, MRI and mammography imaging; women's healthcare including obstetrics/gynecology, menopausal and uro-gynecological services, genetics, gynecological and breast surgical specialties, and primary care of women; and orthopedics, podiatry, general and plastic surgery, neurosurgery, dermatology and pediatric specialties.

The VCU Medical Center at Stony Point averages 82,000 patient visits per year.
