The Department of Dance and Choreography in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts has been ranked among the top 10 choreography schools in the country by seattlepi.com, alongside universities such as Temple University and the University of Arizona.

The top schools were chosen based on whether the degree program emphasized or offered a degree in choreography. In addition, the evaluation considered whether a program was accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance.

“We’re excited to get national recognition,” said Gaynell Sherrod, Ed.D., chair of the Department of Dance and Choreography. “We feel we’re sending out exemplary dance artists and hopefully we’ll attract some of the country’s best and brightest to not only perform but create.”

The VCU dance program focuses on modern dance and ballet, and students are required to take two technique classes daily. For their senior project, students choreograph, present and perform their own work. The program also provides students with professional dance experience through a partnership with the Richmond Ballet.

The VCU School of the Arts is one of the nation’s leading arts schools, and has long been the top public university graduate arts and design program in the country according to U.S. News & World Report.
