VCU Police to conduct administrative checkpoint this Saturday night, Aug. 22

Starting at 10 p.m. in the 700 block of West Main Street, officers will check driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations, among other priorities.

The Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department will conduct an administrative checkpoint in downtown Richmond near the Monroe Park Campus starting this Saturday night, Aug. 22. The checkpoint will operate in the 700 block of West Main Street from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

In partnership with local and state law enforcement partners, VCU Police will conduct driver’s license and vehicle registration checks, remind drivers of proper nighttime safety practices and enforce violations, including driving under the influence.

Where: 700 block of West Main Street

This initiative is in support of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which targets the Labor Day period – from Aug. 19 to Sept. 7 – and reminds drivers of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During a similar checkpoint in August 2025, VCU Police screened 451 vehicles, issued more than 50 traffic summonses and made one arrest for driving under the influence.
