Candidates running in the Nov. 6 midterm elections to represent Virginia in the U.S. Senate will take part in a town hall forum at Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday, Oct. 19.

The event, which will be free and open to the public, will feature Republican nominee Corey Stewart and Libertarian nominee Matt Waters. Del. Lamont Bagby will serve as a surrogate on behalf of Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine.

The event is presented by the Urban League of Greater Richmond Young Professionals, Virginia21 and the Metro Richmond Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and is hosted by the Department of Political Science in the College of Humanities and Sciences.

The forum will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Ave. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will be first-come, first-seated.

Designed as a forum, not a debate, the event will be moderated by Chelsea Higgs Wise, a local community politics writer and activist, as well as an alumna of the VCU School of Social Work.

“We are proud to host area nonpartisan nonprofit organizations seeking to provide free opportunities for students and the public to have direct access to the highest office seekers on the ballot next month," said Ravi Perry, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Political Science. "The result of the U.S. Senate race here in Virginia will reverberate around the nation and we are excited to host the candidates and surrogates to play our small part in helping to educate the public about issues that affect their lives and the lives of the next generation. We view this engagement as central to the mission of an urban public research university.”
