Each day for 34 years, Wanda Clary has been on time, ready to take on the challenges of working as an administrative assistant at a large university.  On Oct. 4, Clary was awarded for her devotion in her field.

Clary received the Dorris Douglas Budd Award at a ceremony held at the Scott House attended by nominees, colleagues and previous winners.  Clary works in the VCU Science, Technology and Society (STS) Program and the dean’s office of the College of Humanities and Sciences. Her position requires attention to detail in event planning and making travel arrangements.  Clary credits her passion for the job for the award recognition – a passion that she said stems from her love of the school and its students.

David Hanson, vice president of finance and administration, presented the awards to the finalists and noted that the nominees’ success correlates with VCU’s Quest for Distinction. “They are living examples of the Quest for Distinction in community engagement, and this is so important internally,” he said.

The Dorris Douglas Budd Award was established in 1981 to honor administrative and support staff who demonstrate exemplary performance and uphold the image and mission of the university.  The award is named for a secretary who served under the vice president of administration from 1951 to 1981.

Clary was one of 14 nominated this year.  Other nominees were Billie Burton, VCU Medical Center, Department of Occupational and Physical Therapy;  Valarie J. Carter, VCU Department of Neurology; Laura S. Georgiadis, VCU Division of Community Engagement; Janice P. Guyer, VCU Department of Physics; Yvonne F. Hargrove, VCU Department of Biostatistics; Clarisse T. Harton, VCU Department of Family Medicine; Brenda Howard, VCU Medical Center, Department of Electrophysiology; Harris B. King, VCU School of Medicine, Office of Student Affairs; Nicole Knight, VCU Medical Center, Dalton Oncology Clinic; Frances Lynch, VCU School of Mass Communications;  Hollyn T. Mangione, VCU Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics; Tanya Sherrod, VCU Medical Center, Women's Surgical Care Unit; and Carolyn W. Wells, VCU Department of Health Administration.
