The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation has presented Salute to Service Awards to a 1962 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and a current VCU School of Medicine student.

Clarence “Clancy” A. Holland, M.D., and David C. Buxton recently were honored during the organization’s fifth annual Presidents’ Gala at Kingsmill in Williamsburg.

Holland was honored for his exemplary service on behalf of all Virginians and Buxton will was recognized for his exemplary service as a medical student.

Holland, a 1962 MCV graduate, has served his patients and his community at large in a variety of roles, including family physician, Virginia Beach city council member, mayor of Virginia Beach and state senator.

As a physician and local official, Holland served the needs of the residents of Hampton Roads. As a senator, he advanced the health of all Virginians through his service on the Joint Commission on Health Care, as well as his service as a member of the Education and Health, Finance, Privileges and Elections, Rehabilitation, and Social Services committees.

Buxton, a student in the VCU School of Medicine, spent his first year in medical school serving as the director of the Honduras Outreach Medical Brigade Relief Effort. His responsibilities included fundraising, physician and student recruitment, and the international coordination that allowed his group to treat more than 7,800 Honduran patients in a two-week period.

Buxton and his team treated nearly 25 percent more patients than the previous year. He also has volunteered in Belize and India and worked as an international mental health intern at the Carter Center and at the International Hospital for Children.

The Salute to Service Awards are given to physicians, medical students and alliance members who are dedicated to creating and nurturing a caring health and disease-prevention environment by providing service on behalf of all Virginians, service to the uninsured and underserved, service to the international community and service to the profession.
