Virginia Commonwealth University returns as the signature sponsor of the VCU Broad Street Mile. The event offers participants the opportunity to enjoy a free festival, compete in a series of 1-mile fun runs or a 5K, and raise money for local charities. The third annual event will take place on Broad Street between Belvidere Street and Hermitage Road on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The Broad Street Mile is a growing VCU and Richmond tradition that celebrates our generous and fun-loving community," said Pamela D. Lepley, vice president for university relations. "VCU is pleased to sponsor this event as an opportunity to support the university and so many other nonprofit organizations that contribute to a vibrant Richmond region.”

The VCU Broad Street Mile provides a unique opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels. Athletes ranging from novice to elite can choose to run or walk the 5K or one of the 1-mile fun runs. Each of the fun runs has different themes that include the Spirit Mile, Kids Mile, No Limits Mile, Senior Mile and Doggie Dash.

“In addition to the fun runs and 5k, the event showcases the awesome nonprofit organizations that support our local Richmond communities”, said Johnathan Mayo, president of Avail, the firm responsible for marketing and managing the event.

Last year’s VCU Broad Street Mile featured more than 30 local charitable organizations that raised money and used the event to gain awareness and recruit volunteers. Runners and walkers have an opportunity to donate to one of many charity partners participating in the event. There is no fee for charity partners to get involved and organizations may still register.
