Communication Arts staff member wins Budd Award

The 2013 winner of the Dorris Douglas Budd Award is Deborah D. Van Buren.

On Sept. 20, Van Buren received the award at a ceremony held at the Scott House attended by nominees, colleagues and previous winners. Van Buren works in the Department of Communication Arts in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and has been with VCU for 14 years.

Michael Rao, Ph.D., president of VCU and the VCU Health System, presented the awards to the finalists and noted that the nominees’ success correlates with VCU’s Quest for Distinction.

The Dorris Douglas Budd Award was established in 1981 to honor administrative and support staff who demonstrate exemplary performance and uphold the image and mission of the university. The award is named for a secretary who served under the vice president of administration from 1951 to 1981.

Van Buren was one of 10 nominated this year. Other nominees were Marsha Booth, VCU Medical Center, Department of Emergency Medicine; Janice Coppedge, VCU Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics - Newborn ICU; Jean Ford, VCU Medical Center, Department of Acute Care Surgery; Dennis E. Henson, VCU Department of Surgery; Diana Pauley, VCU Department of Psychology; Virginia S. Schmitz, VCU Department of English; Danielle Scott, VCU Medical Center, Medical Respiratory ICU; Shenia M. Tyler, VCU School of Medicine, Admissions Office; and Carolyn W. Wells, VCU Department of Health Administration.
