Virginia Commonwealth University has named Magnus Johnsson, senior associate vice president for presidential and university philanthropy, as interim vice president for development and alumni relations, effective March 1.

This appointment follows DAR vice president Jay Davenport’s departure for a vice presidential role at Penn State University.

“I have worked closely with Magnus throughout my tenure at VCU and know he will excel in this interim role,” VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D., said. “Magnus believes in our mission and is skilled at showing our alumni and supporters how our mission impacts Virginia, the nation and the world. Their support, and his leadership, will continue to power VCU’s momentum."

Johnsson, who has been with VCU since 2007, established the university’s principal giving program for gifts of $1 million and above, creating a collaborative, institution-wide model that has fueled substantial fundraising growth. He has also led the elevation of VCU’s corporate and foundation relations program, overseen the implementation of a comprehensive planned giving program and expanded regional and national donor outreach through alumni/donor events and engagement strategies.

Johnsson has served in key volunteer leadership positions, including as past president of the Virginia Association of Fundraising Executives and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central Virginia Chapter. He is a Certified Fund Raising Executive and holds a Master of Public Administration with a focus in nonprofit management from VCU and a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from James Madison University.

Johnsson serves on the Board of Directors of Leadership Metro Richmond and is a 2015 graduate of the program, reflecting his commitment to civic and community leadership.

“I’m really excited about supporting Dr. Rao’s vision for how philanthropy and engagement can power the success of our students and faculty to advance our mission, including significantly strengthening our research impact,” Johnsson said. “We have a talented, deeply committed team, and I’m honored to step into this role alongside colleagues who care so deeply about VCU’s future. We have important work ahead, and I’m excited to continue collaborating across the university to support the Unlocking Potential Campaign.”

VCU will begin a search for the permanent role in the coming weeks.
