The Virginia
Commonwealth University Medical Center and First Things First will be
offering Boot Camp for New Dads,
a national educational program for first-time fathers.
The first workshop will take place Saturday, Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to noon in MainHospital, 8th floor east, room 210, located on the MCV Campus.
Boot Camp for New Dads is a father-to-father, community-based workshop designed to help new dads face both the challenges and opportunities of fatherhood through "hands on" education in the care of their babies.
"The VCU Health System
truly values education and anticipatory guidance for our patients," said
Valerie Coleman, nurse educator in VCU's Department of Women's Health. "I am
very pleased to add this additional dimension to our prenatal education program
to help prepare our fathers-to-be with yet another experience that will help
increase their abilities and confidence to be the best parents they can.
During the program, veteran fathers, accompanied by their babies, will orient rookie fathers on common topics related to fatherhood and parenting. Some areas will include caring for babies, caring for moms, working regular work hours with little or no sleep, financing a family and dealing with mothers-in-law.
"Babies don't come with manuals and first time expectant dads really appreciate this program designed for men by men," said Bob Ruthazer, certified family life educator and director of First Things First. "We want to be great dads and supportive partners and Daddy Boot Camp helps us do just that."
Additional workshops will be held every other month. The suggested donation for participants is $25, but scholarships are available upon request. For more information or to register, visit www.firstthingsrichmond.org or call 804.288.3431.
